Someone Asked Me To Be His Mistress

In the last few weeks, I had gotten a lot of offers. Some are good, some are ok, and one is ridiculous.

A PR executive asked me to become his mistress.  I was not sure if I give people the wrong impression. I even asked my friend what do they think about the way I dress. My friend said I look classy, I guess it was not my look. Maybe he thinks I really love money.

What I wore last week, on the day I got the offer.

That is kind of true. All my life, I love money.  I read business magazine when I was 7 [ I learned to read when I was 6].  When I was a kid, I used to buy book at wholesale price, read and resell at retail price. I know the value of money and how much we need it.

Anyway I told the guy ” I have no interest, and wish him the best”. I might love money a lot. I might enjoy $50 bowl of soup, or wearing cashmere and silk. But at the end of the day, I love myself more.

I look very high maintenance. But it does not mean, I would do anything for a new Chanel or a Marchesa dress.

If you think I will trade myself for money, think again. I have two hands and a brain, no matter what happens I can survive.

How To Become A Social Media Expert And Hire One

Step 1: Get a Twitter Account, open an account on Facebook

Step 2: Send out a tweet, update your status

Step 3: Put “Social Media Expert” on your resume

Note: Don’t hire the one above

Being on Social Media does not make you an expert. I tweeted this image a few months ago. Image via lauraleewalker.com

Social Media is changing every second. What was hot yesterday might not be relevant today.  Nobody is an expert because we are all newbies.

Even with 63000 followers on Twitter, I still need to learn a lot everyday.  It is impossible to find someone who understands everything on social media. But you can find someone who understand how to be social.

A strong network does not always mean that person will be good at managing your social media. It just means s/he is popular and there are many ways to get there . Believe me I know how easy  it is to become internet socialite.  I can brag all day that Arianna Huffington is following me on Twitter or I am enjoying the new message from Tom Anderson on Google+ [ he is very charming, and I love his messages lol] . But that does not make me  an expert in social media. It does not prove that I am very social at all.

If you are looking for someone to manage your social media. Find a person who is social in your community both online and offline instead of going after the expert, guru, rockstar elite who does not care about your brand. Also do your research, avoid anyone like this . Someone who understands the important of a community and has one.  Think carefully before you hire someone. Hiring your social media consultant like hiring  a nanny for your newborn baby. You don’t give your baby to a random person on the street who voluntter to help you [ *cough**cough* unpaid intern] , you give him/her to someone you can trust.

Remember

It takes years to build a reputation, and it only takes one tweet to destroy it.

Talk to you again soon

How To Use Technology to Save Money in Everyday Life

This is a guest post by Jesse Nowlin.

Years ago one had to venture out to the local river to wash their clothing, and everything took forever.  Today, thanks to technology, we have much easier solutions, but they often come at a high price. While you can have a washing machine that will tweet you when your clothes are clean, this doesn’t help you if buying such a machine breaks the bank! Here is an essential list of ways modern technology can save you money in your everyday life.

Shopping First off – NEVER go shopping when you’re hungry. Do you send your spouse to the store and forget to give them the shopping list? Maybe you always forget it on the kitchen counter? If you have a smartphone (most do these days), you can use an app to store and sync lists with your significant other/roommate.  Here are 3 Apps you can use to keep your lists synced and organized: 1. 2Do – http://www.2doapp.com/

My personal favorite is good for more than just lists- it’s a fully loaded task manager.  You can sync with iCloud, MobileMe, Yahoo!, Custom iCal Servers, Dropbox, and Toodledo. The beauty of syncing with Dropbox is that you can have two people sign into the same dropbox account with 2Do and then your lists will be totally synchronized! 2. Things – http://culturedcode.com/things/iphone/

Things is an app that has an interesting approach to keeping track of all your tasks.  Supporting wireless syncing with the desktop version on your computer, things allows you to enter in your shopping lists, and know they will be on both your desktop and Smartphone.   When heading out to the store you won’t have to worry about finding that receipt your list was hastily scribbled on the back of.  It’s in your phone, which is always with you, and you can add to it any time you need. 3. Remember The Milk – http://www.rememberthemilk.com/services/iphone/

The classic, user friendly Remember the Milk has been around for years, pioneering the space of list management. Free to download, they have an online interface where you can log-in from your computer and write your list, and when you head out to the store, grab your phone and you’re ready to go! Grocery Price Comparison PriceGrabber - http://www.pricegrabber.com/

Price Grabber is a website which finds and compares prices on popular products, and enables you to find the product you want for the lowest price around. There are a number of websites similar to this in each country. Here are a few more: http://www.mygrocerydeals.com/ http://www.shopbot.ca/

Finance & Receipt Tracking There are a number of apps out there that wish to be your own personal assistant.  Let’s focus just on the money aspect of it. Instead of having to keep track of receipts which realistically will go into one of your grocery bags, never to be seen again, you can take a photo and forget about it.  Here are 2 apps that enable you to track your spending and figure out where all your money is going! 1. Shoeboxed – https://app.shoeboxed.com/

Shoeboxed is a company that will store images of your receipts and offers a service to read and input the information from your receipts.  Shoeboxed is the service that I know of which works in Israel, but there are others that can store your receipts as well.

2. Lemon - http://lemon.com/ Lemon is a receipt and money tracking website with apps for just about all your devices. Lemon differs from the others by being totally automated. The receipts are analyzed by their system after being uploaded and then the text is extracted and organized.  This system is for American receipts, and you can still use it to store your receipts and keep track of what you are spending. Phone Services Enough already! Phone bill costs are through the roof! Here’s how you can save some money on your phone bills.  Step one; kill your land line. Get rid of that old house phone and replace it with a shiny new VOIP phone. VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is the technology used to make calls over the Internet. Here are some awesome contenders to take the place of your old school land line.   1. Skype http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home

Skype, the largest of all the contenders, was recently purchased by Microsoft for $8.5 Billion (yes, that’s Billion with a B), and is being integrated all over the place. It powers video calls on facebook, TV’s, and just about every platform you can think of. The monthly subscriptions for unlimited calling is where you can really save your money.  If you don’t want to rely on your cell-phone or computer always being on, you can buy a dedicated Skype phone (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/home-phone/cordless-phone/) and use that as your new home phone.  Be advised: Skype cannot be used for emergency calling.

2. Ooma - http://www.ooma.com/ Another service you could look into, and can be used for emergency calling, is Ooma. This is a slightly more expensive option, seeing as you have to buy the equipment, but I’ve been told that the call quality is impeccable. They were recently ranked #1 in phone service and quality in a customer survey. The system is very advanced, and the units are designed extremely well. Not only that, but once the system is in place, you have unlimited free calling in the United States. 3. Grasshopper – http://grasshopper.com/

Grasshopper is the Entrepreneur’s phone system.  Offering toll free numbers, unlimited extensions, call forwarding, and an online interface – all for $10 a month. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for an American office-line.  If you’re doing service in the states and want a VOIP office solution, this is for you.  Check it out!

Texting: On the topic of phones and how expensive they are, cell phone carriers are ripping us off.  You can use Skype on your cell phone to save on minutes as well, but what about texting? In places such as Israel, where you pay for individual text messages, and cannot buy any kind of shared or unlimited texting plans, we end up paying through the nose! But, wait- there is a solution! Actually several of them…  This area has been pioneered by blackberry for years with their incredibly popular BBM (Blackberry Messenger) platform.  Now there have been many new entries into this area of sending messages via the Internet, most prominently being the largest company in the world, and technology behemoth, Apple Inc.  Apple recently launched their iMessage service, which came along with the 5th generation of their iOS mobile operating system.  Here are the details on Apple’s and other service’s offerings: 1. BBM (Blackberry Messenger)

If you have a Blackberry with Blackberry service then you have BBM.  BBM works on the system of each blackberry having a PIN which when shared connects you to your friend.  The messages are sent instantly through the Blackberry network and act like an instant text message.  You don’t have to be online all the time to receive, and when you reconnect you will receive any messages you missed while offline.  This is different from the standard instant message where you always had to be connected and online for IM’s to work.

2. iMessage - http://www.apple.com/ios/features.html#imessage

iMessage is Apple’s long awaited answer to BBM and the other entries on the market. It works, and it works well.  iMessage is only available on Apple devices running iOS 5, but once it’s setup, there’s nothing more for you to do. If the contact you’re texting has an iPhone (or iPad, or iPod Touch) with iOS 5, the text will instantly change into an iMessage and go through the Internet free of charge.  If they don’t, then it will be sent as a standard text message. Very simple in the traditional Apple style,  iMessage is quick, slick, and easy to use.  You can also use iMessage with wifi only devices entering your contacts email address instead of their phone number.

Cross Platform Messengers 3. WhatsApp - http://www.whatsapp.com/

An amazing app that works on iPhones, Android, Blackberry’s, and Nokia’s, it enables you to connect and chat with your friends no matter what smartphone they have! The design is well done, and looks really nice on Android. You have the option of changing your background with any of their themes, or a photo of your own.  If you are interested in chatting with a group of your friends, you can do that as well!

4. Touch – http://www.touch.com/

Formerly known as Pingchat, a beautifully designed application that once again serves as a cross platform chat.  Not only does it do chat, it is geared around a sharing of experiences with your family and friends.  Touch is for you to share your experiences with specific people, similar to how you would share posts with your friends via circles in Google Plus.

5. Kik - http://kik.com/

Kik is an application developed by one of the people who worked on Blackberry’s famous BBM Platform.  It is the most robust and fast platform out of all the above applications.  It only does chat but it does it better than the rest, and has a superstar team behind it.

Use Less Data When you sign up for a cell-phone you used to be able to purchase unlimited data.  Now, thanks to the iphone and other “super-smartphones”, cell-phone companies are having trouble keeping their infrastructure up to date, so they’ve started charging for every bit of data we use. Here’s one tool that’s crucial to fighting back and using less data to avoid going over crazy data charges.

Onavo – http://www.onavo.com/

Onavo is an Israeli Startup that is saving iPhone and Android users money everywhere.  It works by running in the background and compressing your data as it is sent and received from your device.  I use it on a daily basis and it saves hundreds of megabytes per week.

Other Money Savers Another approach for saving money on every day items, is through the latest purchasing phenomenon that has been going on for the past 2 years: group buying.  Groupon got the ball rolling and several clones popped up almost over night.  Google has their version called Google Offers, Amazon is building one, and there are a few others. Here are the links for those: Living Social – livingsocial.com Amazon Local – http://local.amazon.com/ Groupon – http://www.groupon.com/ Google Offers – https://www.google.com/offers/

Ordering Online? One last item in our long list of things to do to save money with technology, is a website called The Find, which will simply find the lowest price on the Internet for the item you’re looking for.  They have over 320 million products from more than 500,000 stores, and online merchants are currently available through their search engine. Check them out at http://www.thefind.com/ Public Service Announcement

Always Backup Your Essential Files. Its Very Important, and Dropbox is how to make it happen. 2GB Free and an automatic backup tool for your Mac or PC with access from your smartphone.  Check it out here: www.dropbox.com

Why College Is A Bad Investment

All my life, I love studying but I do not like school. When I was a kid, unlike other kids I would save all my money to buy books not candies or toys. When I was in middle school, I used to buy book at wholesale price, read and resell it to my classmates at retail price. I enjoyed gaining knowledge and money at the same time. I do not like to memorize anything because I have Google. The more I spend time at school, the more I hate it.  I feel like I am wasting time because I learn much more from life than any teacher.

Why do I need college, if I have Google?

And here is why I think college is a horrible investment.

Let assume the average tuition is $15 000 a year.  I know it is much lower in Canada but keep in mind our post-secondary institution are subsidized. The goverment is investing into you [ or to be more correct your parents paid it in advance with taxes].

$15 000 x 4 years = $60 000

With $60 000  you can:

- Start a startup

  • I hang out with a lot of startup founders. Everyone said it is the best experience they have ever had. No business school, even Harvard can actually teach you the skills better than doing it. If you are successed, you can be the next Mark Zuckerberg. If you don’t, you will still walk out with some valuable skills. Learning to accept failure is one of the most important lesson in life. It is  priceless, $60000 is still too cheap.

- Have down payment to buy a small house.

  • From experience, investing in real estate  is one of the safest investment I know. Asian loves real estate. No matter where we go, the first thing we try to do is buying a house. Even we will have to rent the house and live in one room, we will still do it. We believe that in order to settle down we need a roof over our heads. I would be very surprised if I meet a 30+  Asian that does not own at least one house. It looks like every Asian family has like at least 2 real estate properties: one to live, and rent the other.  My grandma came to this country 20 years with nothing. She cannot  even speak English but with her frugal lifestyle she bought two houses. Unlike college tuition, your house will still be there and most likely you will make a profit if you invest wisely. You will gain a lot of real estate knowledge. [ I am biased. My dad is real estate investor and consultant]

- Travel around the world at least twice.

  • There is no better way to learn the world than see it yourself. The more you go the more you will learn. Everyone has their own story and lesson. Everyday you can learn a new lesson, learn to look at the world differently. You learn to go beyond your comfort zone.
And there are other options. I know not everyone has $60 000 under their mattress to do any of the above, but being debt free is still better.BUT
- I need college to find a job
  • I don’t think so. If you are willing to start from the bottom, there are always way to move up. Some of most successful people I know did not go to college. They followed their dreams, worked hard, and  gained a lot of experience. Many of them are high level executive at big companies before they turn 30. They started from entry-level and worked their way up. Their friends who went to college usually wasted 4 years and ended up in the same type of job that they would get without a degree.
  • People forget that college is about gaining knowledge not just a piece of paper. If you can find another way to do it, there is no reason to waste time in college. If you want to learn something, you will learn it no matter what.
  • Most people I know do not practice what they studied. For example a friend of mine Matt Harty, who was the Asian Pacific Vice-President of FOX Network and now is the General Manager at Annalect Group.  Anyone would expect him to study marketing or maybe PR. Matt actually studied law but never practiced it.
- I go to college for the networking.
  • I make  hundreds of  new friends outside college every month. It is true that I am pretty popular on social networks with  60 000 followers on Twitter. But I also meet a lot of people in real life everyday. You do not need to go to college to build relationship. There are a lot of opportunities to do it. Most of the time, people don’t bother to try to build relationship. Opportunity will not come unless you go out and find it.  Join MeetUp group, check out different events in your city, make new friends on social media.  And if you think social media friendships are not real, you need to read Diana Adam’s article [ @adamsconsulting]

 - My parents/family/___ wants me to go to college.

  • Life is too short to live someone’s else life.  If they love you, they will understand.
  • I love this line from a Penelopy Trumk’s article “Going to college doesn’t show anything except that the kids or the parents (or both) got scared and gave up on the idea of individualized learning at the most crucial point in a kid’s transition to the adult world.”
Saying no to college is not for everyone. If you want to become a lawyer or doctor, going to college is a requirement.  Everyone learns in a different way. Our education system does not teach me anything, but it might work for you. This is just my opinion. If  I can go back in time, I would not go to college. I would prefer staying home reading classical literature , running around meeting people, taking interesting classes, running a charity, helping people etc. I learn so much more from the people around me than from any teacher.

And if I can, I would take my little sis Monster out of school, and throw her into life.

When I have kids, I am planning to home-school them. I find our education system is just too messed up. They do not teach the kids the skills they need. They can go to college if they want to, but it is not something I would expect from them.  It is their choice and I want them to experience the most they can.It is your turn: What do you think about college?

It’s NEVER Too Late

You know I love Google+ and spend quite a lot of time on it. This week I came across this post by Hillel Fuld [ @hilzfuld] on G+. I have shared the slide on all my social networks, but I still think more people need to see it. Hope you enjoy it xo

Google was late to search. Facebook was late to social networking. Apple was late to the MP3 Player.
Where would we be if they listened to everyone who said they were too late?

It’s never too late. Just do it better.

Are We Blind?

I read this blog post years ago on a friend’s blog….Sometime I have to ask myself how blind I am.
Are we blind? – Source: notsogoodphotography

Our eyes are delusional. When we see something like a nice dress or a nice shirt, you would want to try it on. Perhaps even buy it, for $100 bucks or so.When you see a fancy car, you would want to one day own that car. Perhaps make it as our motivation to work towards a goal to one day own a BMW M5. Our materialistic needs all begin with our eyes, what we see and what we imagine. So then what about a blind person? When he cannot see, he cannot know…he can only imagine. Can a blind man be materialistic then? Even if he got himself a really expensive shirt and imagines it so, does he feel the same satisfaction as a person that can see? or does he feel hollow within and is simply just lying to himself?
Materialism has always been the motivation for us to strive to live and work harder, then what is the motivation for a blind man who cannot see the things he likes? Perhaps, we are the blind ones ourselves….blinded by colorful objects and strangely worded brands that doesn’t even mean anything….

The Best Solution That We Forget

Monster likes to eat mashed potatoes at night. I am not sure why but I remember one day, she asked me how to make mashed potatoes without milk or cream, I told her to use water. From that day, she always makes mashed potatoes at night when she is hungry. She talked about it last night before bed time, and it reminded me of a story.

I used to follow expats forums quite a lot. I am an immigrant. I know it is very hard to adapt the new life and assimilate. I like to go expats forums in Vietnam and answer questions. Once I came a cross this question

” I really miss mashed potatoes. Where can I buy the box?”

When I Lose My Right

Today I had a girl night out. When I got my wallet to pay the bill; I realized something was not right. A $20 was missing. My sisters and I always know exactly how much money we have. Alicia and Monster actually count their money everyday, it is their hobby. $20 is not big. But if I still have it, I would buy some colorful macarons. But now I no longer have the right to spend my money. Someone took the right away from me, and it does not feel good.

How To Find The Next Big Guy And Become His Friend

My father loves to brag about how I  hang out with important people outside my family’s circles. He tells everyone that I like to have lunch with this new politician or showing up at this invited only hot business party.  A lot of my friends became my father’s client or business partner, and he talks more about them. It gets really annoying after a while.

It is actually not that hard to manage meeting important people. You know I have a bubbly personality. I am everywhere, hang out with everyone, and treat them like my family. I guess that is my little secret. Read more…

When You Are Not Good Enough [VIDEO]

At some point in my life, I was that girl. I felt insecure about myself and believed I don’t deserve many things. Unless you are princess of England or son of Donald Trump, 99% of the time you will feel that you are “not good enough” too.  It is normal. That does not mean you cannot get what you want. It just means you need to earn it.

It is the same in business, most of the time you do not have the final perfect product to sell. Do you think you don’t deserve to be funded?   You need to learn to sell your idea, sell your vision, sell your passion. You need to convince the investors that you deserve every penny they will invest into you.

Next time you feel insecure, remember that you still have one of the most valuable thing ….. Yourself
